CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S ‘THE ODYSSEY’ RECLAIMS GLOBAL BOX-OFFICE CROWN LOS ANGELES, September 7, 2026 — GPC.NEWS — Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has returned to the top of the global box office, demonstrating remarkable staying power months into its theatrical run. The Universal Pictures epic generated approximately $46 million worldwide over the weekend, edging out “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which collected about $44 million during the same period. “The Odyssey” has now accumulated approximately $1.63 billion worldwide, placing Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic among the most commercially successful films of the year. Its performance is particularly notable because of the film’s R rating, traditionally considered a limitation on the potential audience for expensive blockbuster productions. “The Odyssey” has now surpassed “Deadpool & Wolverine” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide, setting another milestone in Nolan’s career. Ryan Reynolds, whose “Deadpool & Wolverine” previously held the record, publicly congratulated Nolan on the achievement. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, leading an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Nolan filmed the production using large-format IMAX technology, with the director once again emphasizing theatrical presentation as an essential part of the moviegoing experience. The continued success of “The Odyssey,” alongside “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” has helped drive an unusually strong summer for cinemas after years in which Hollywood struggled to consistently return audiences to theaters. Rather than one blockbuster simply replacing another, the two films are now demonstrating that multiple major theatrical releases can sustain enormous worldwide audiences simultaneously. For Nolan, whose films have repeatedly combined ambitious filmmaking with commercial success, “The Odyssey” has become another landmark — and one of the largest box-office achievements of his career.
